The standalone SparkChess packs some exciting features in addition to the online version.
Here are the highlights:
 Guru mode: in addition to the three difficulty levels present in the online version, SparkChess has a "Guru" mode that plays much stronger but slower (thinking up to 60 seconds per move) |
 Visual Aids is a great tutoring feature, highlighting the pieces you can move or under attack and whether or not you can capture an enemy piece. This is very useful when you're in check and may miss possible moves and it also helps you take advantage of oppotunities you may overlook otherwise. The last move is also shown with an arrow. |
 2D Mode - if you're more confortable with a "traditional" representation of the board, you can switch to the 2D Mode. This mode is also useful when you want a clearer, unobscured view. |
 "Help me move" will give you handy advices if you're stuck. You decide if you actually want to do the suggested move or not. The suggestion is given in plain English, with a nice visual arrow and can be a poweful aid. |
 Board Analysis shows how the Board is controlled, in shades of blue, red and purple, helping you in the strategic assessment and positioning. Advance pieces to neutral areas; see where are the enemy's strongholds; lure your opponent away to weaken its position. |
 Board Editor is a very powerful feature - it allows you to build your own game and recreate famous positions. What's more, you can import and export the Board in FEN format. |
 Replay Mode allows you to move back and forth through a game using a standard player interface. At any time you can 'eject' and start playing from that position. Moreover, comments such as game openings are displayed. |
 PGN Support: Coupled with the Replay Mode, the Import/Export feature lets you copy&paste games in PGN format. This way you can study famous games with comments and annotations and you can take over at any time. You can find thousands of free PGN games on the web, a learning goldmine. |

Your chess board and pieces are the best by far (compare to any other program, including Fritz 12). When I'm feeling really insecure I play against Beginning and Casual, and when I'm feeling good and can concentrate adequately, I play against Advanced, and then when I'm feeling really courageous I play against Guru. With Guru I do ask for assistance now and then. I have some other programs I use, but must admit that I really enjoy playing against SparkChess. Thanks to the new way to replay previous games with SparkChess, I often go back to replay the games that gave me the greatest challenge and especially the games I lost. I replay some of those over and over again until I can catch up with the SparkChess responses. My game has improved immensely since playing against SparkChess ( I really appreciate the way you've set up a large board and chess pieces and the excellent assists very attractively set up. I use SparkChess mainly because the board and pieces make me feel I'm actually playing on a physical board with solid pieces. Really amazing. System requirements
SparkChess (flashCHESS) comes in three versions:
- Windows application (Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7) - 4 Mb;
- Mac OS X application - 6 Mb;
- Adobe AIR application (Windows, Mac, Linux, requires Adobe AIR framework) - 0.6 Mb;
If you already have Adobe AIR installed, the best option is to download the AIR version.
The Windows and Mac versions are fully portable (no installer is required) so you can put SparkChess (flshCHESS) on an USB drive and play anywhere!
